Summer Workshops 2011

Cheer, Dance, and Gymnastics: Kristin Bowen, All ages. June 6-10, 2011 (9:30 - 11:30am) [$115]
Boys and girls are welcome to come learn different types of dance (jazz, hip hop, tap), gymnastics (tumbling) and cheerleading (cheers, stunts and jumps). They will learn different ways to move their bodies and stay active. Skills will be adapted to individual ability levels.

Sports Sensations: Kristi Bowen, All ages. (12:30-2:30am) June 6-10, 2011 [$115]
Boys and girls of all ages will play individual and team sports. Learn about the rules and strategies of different games, build equipment and have fun. Skills will be adapted to individual ability levels.

Kids Can Cook: Mrs. Seese; All ages. (9:30-11:30am) June 13-17, 2010 [$130]
If you think making pizza, yummy apple crisp and an original bacon/ranch mashed potato recipe sounds like fun, then this is the workshop for you. Learn basic cooking skills, good table manners, and make fun kitchen crafts.

Art Exploration: Jeff Ryan; All Ages. (12:30-2:30pm) June 13-17, 2011 [$120]
Art exploration through hands on activities including ceramics, paper mache, sand casting (plaster), digital photography, and decoration of MLA public space. Join Mr. Ryan for a week of exciting art.

Fencing: Historical Masters: Shelly and Bret Dusic; Ages 8 and up. (1-2:30pm) June 20-24, 2011 [$100]
Each day will explore the life, culture and method of a historical fencing master. Lecture style- interactive class with practical application of period fencing techniques. Parents are welcome to attend as well.

Ultimate Construction: Pat Morgan, Ages 5-7 (9:30-11:30am) June 20-24, 2011 [$115]
Learn to build from the ground up, the top down, over, under and inside out. We’ll use life size building tubes, Legos, trains, marble tracks, unit blocks and much more. Bring your talents, skills and curiosity and join Ms. Pat for fun at the building site.

Mosaic Madness 1: Trish Morgan Dowling , Ages 8-11 (12:30-2:30pm)  June 20-24, 2011 [$130]
Join Ms. Trish and the ancient art of mosaic for Mosaic Madness. Campers will use pebbles, beads, marbles, seashells, seeds, and glass tile pieces to create original, handmade, simple mosaics. Campers are welcome to bring any favorite stones, shells or beads to create their own special individual mosaic keepsakes. Projects will be available for pick up at MLA two weeks after the workshop.

B.Y.O.G. (Bring Your Own Goggles): Paula Taylor,  Ages 5-8 (9:30-11:30am) June 27-July 1, 2011 [$130]
Let’s get down and dirty with chemical reactions! Explosions, slime and messes are par for the course. Explore basic laboratory equipment while using the scientific method.

Fabulous Fleece: Corinne Seese, Ages 8-11 (9:30-11:30am) June 27-July 1, 2011 [$130]
There are so many wonderful and useful things you can make out of fleece! Blankets, pillows, toys for your pet, and more. Come and join in on the fun as we create many simple things out of fleece that you can take home and share with your friends and family.

Fencing: Historical Forms: Shelly and Bret Dusic; Ages 8 and up (1-2:30pm) June 27-June30, 2011 [$150]
Each day will look at the use of an off-hand form or defensive item. We will discuss the construction, time period, style manner and method of use, followed by intensive training with the item. Parents are welcome to attend as well.

American Dolls and Friends 1 and 2:  Carrie Mc Millen,  Ages 5-6,  Corinne Seese – Ages 7-9, (12:30-2:30pm) June 27-July 1 [$115]
Your 18" doll deserves the best and you are just the friend to make it happen! Bring your doll everyday to the workshop and we’ll begin the class with a fashion show. Some of the projects we’ll be doing are making matching purses, jewelry, and a special box for her to hold all of her things. We will be ending the week with a tea party.

Sink Your Teeth Into Roald Dahl: Paula Taylor, Ages 5-8, (9:30am-11:30am), July 11-15, 2011 [$115]
Children will explore several stories by beloved, eccentric author Roald Dahl. We will read The Enormous Crocodile, Esio Trot and excerpts from several of his longer works including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Related activities will include arts and crafts, edible creations and dramatic exercises.

Can You Dig It?: Paula Taylor, Ages 8-11, (12:30-2:30pm), July 11-15, 2011 [$130]
Explore archaeology with hands on activities, computer games and crafts. We will end the week with a large scale group dig. Can we find the artifacts to put it all together?

Harry Potter Cookshop Year 1: Mike Whitten, Ages 5-7, (9:30-11:30am), July 18-22, 2011 [$130]
Welcome to Hogworts Cookshop! During this course young wizards will learn the culinary skills to give their spell casting that extra boost. All graduates, after completion, will receive verification into the Order of Sous Wizards. Who said cooking couldn’t be magical?

RiverWorks Discovery 1 and 2: Shannon Dey August 1-5, 2011 [$115]

Discovery 2 - Ages 8-11 at 12:30-2:30
Join the education staff from Friends of Deckers Creek for the fun and interactive RiverWorks Discovery program to learn and explore the commerce, culture and conservation of our local and national waterways. Campers will get to explore and improve their local West Run stream right through the MLA campus through stream clean-ups (boots and proper attire please), stream quality experiments and macroinvertibrate (stream "bugs") investigations. Campers will also get the chance to design and develop the MLA outdoor classroom near the stream. At the end of the week, campers will receive official RiverWorks Discovery Otter and Duck patches in recognition of their participation and service to MLA and their community.

 

Please note that students have the option to stay for Lunch and  Recess (11:30 am  to 12:30pm) if they are taking a morning and afternoon workshop for an additional $25 charge, please include in your deposit.  All workshops are Monday through Thursday and have a 12-student limit, unless otherwise noted. Workshop students are invited to join us at Krepps Park and Pool on Fridays. See Pool information for details.
