Besides the core subjects taught within the regular classroom, MLA believes that ancillary classes (art, music, physical education, and foreign language) are equally important to produce well-rounded children. MLA prides itself on the uniqueness of its ancillary classes.

MLA is also unique in that its ancillary classes are not separate from the regular classroom. Ancillary teachers plan with the individual classroom teachers to fit their curriculum into the current theme. This provides incentive, real-world learning, continuity, and cross-learning experiences.

We believe that all children should be exposed to a foreign language at an early age. At MLA, Senora Jen works with all ages on a weekly basis to share both oral and written Spanish.  She uses creative methods such as music, hands on projects, and conversation to share Spanish with her students.  Last year, each student received a CD of songs in Spanish to help them remember vocabulary and phrases.  At the end of the year students were recorded singing their favorite songs so that this year our Spanish CD has some songs performed by our own students! Senora Jen also works with classroom teachers to design Spanish projects that fit with current units of learning.  For example, in 2010 upper elementary students worked on their research skills by writing a paper and presenting on Spanish speaking countries, or presenting about specific aspects of different tribes in the Amazon.
